Hindustan Unilever Net Profit Surges By 18% Exceeding Expectations

Hindustan Unilever is reported to have had an 18% increase in its net profit, as it exceeded street expectations, which was as a result of remarkable gains.

Also, the FMCG major’s net sales for the period of three months increased by 15% from the previous year to Rs 5,504 crore, which is ‘marginally’ under the expectation of analysts.

In the first quarter, HUL had a remarkable gain of Rs 51 crore from the sale of properties, it separately had a ‘restructuring’ cost of Rs 5.95 crore as well as a ‘write back of provision’, owing to a brand disposed, in an earlier year, totaling to Rs 9.57 crore.

However, without the exceptional items, HUL’s profit after tax was Rs 578 crore, as analysts on the average had anticipated HUL’s first quarter net profit to be at Rs 587 crore on net sales of Rs 5,529 crore, following the CNBC-TV18 poll. Their shares were being sold down by 0.7% at Rs 323.75 on NSE, in the afternoon trade, as they had reached a decline of Rs 320.05, early in the session.

Moreover, HUL stated: “Commodity inflation continues to be at high levels with cost of goods sold going up 480 basis points. Cost pressures were managed dynamically through aggressive savings programmes coupled with judicious pricing. The overall competitive intensity remained high".

'Bhindi Baazaar Inc' shakes you, sometimes to core!

You can take the gangster out of Mumbai, but you really can't take Mumbai out of the gangster genre of cinema. How many films have we seen where young people from the seamier side of Mumbai's notorious underbelly get into the world of crime and other furtive pleasures?

Let's not make a list of the underworld films, recent and remote which "Bhindi Baazaar Inc" echoes. Suffice to say this one too shakes you, sometimes to the core. It is gritty edgy tactile and earthy, filled with actors who look unwashed, unshaven brazen and brash enough to pass off as real gangsters on Mumbai's crowded roads.

Gun's the word. The only language that these people speak is the language of violence. As one of the semi-pivotal characters with bruises and fractures says: "What difference does it make whether it's the public, police or colleagues? I am used to the thrashing." That sense of expected violence at the pit of the stomach runs through the film's underbelly.

"Bhindi Baazaar Inc" serenades a genre which has been done to brutal death in Bollywood. Sex here is for barter and worse. Take it or leave it. In an episode echoing Vishal Bhardwaj's "Maqbool" with vigorous temerity, the ganglord's recruit kills his own mentor and sleeps with the woman that the mentor was lusting after.

Recall the Pankaj Kapoor-Tabu-Irrfan Khan axis in "Maqbool". Shakespeare meets Ram Gopal Varma. You'd immediately see where Ghalib Asab Bopali's 'scream' play in "Bhindi Baazaar" is coming from. Replete with rugged references to the tradition of Mumbai cinema's enduring allegiance to gangsterism, the film moves at an even trot.

Bolstered by hard-hitting images of violence, the narration warms up menacingly towards a heated climax. Bhatt seeks inspiration from the great raconteurs of gangsterism Ram Gopal Varma, for starters.

It isn't originality that gives this work its bearings and resonances. It's the way the familiar congregations of the scruffy and the savage people are packaged and projected that keeps us riveted.

At the helm of the pulsating proceedings are the two pickpocket friends. Prashant Narayanan (excellent) and newcomer Gautam Sharma (confident) remind us of Dev Patel and Ankur Vikal in Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" and Sharman Joshi and Farukh Kabir in "Allah Ka Banday".

While resonantly echoing all these violent predecessors, "Bhindi Baazaar Inc" manages to stand on its own two feet.

Hepatitis Disease Affects Million

HepatitisExperts and doctors have revealed that the number of people affected by hepatitis disease have reached in millions. It was estimated that around 10 million people are affected by hepatitis C while 1.3 million are affected by hepatitis B. Experts said that only few people would be benefitted by receiving the antiviral drugs for the disease.

Experts added that only one in five infants is vaccinated against hepatitis B at the time of their birth. It was reported that around 67% of injecting drug users in the world have been exposed to hepatitis C whereas around 10% have been exposed to hepatitis B.

It was found out that in the UK; around half of the injecting drug users have been infected with the hepatitis C virus, while the rate for exposure to hepatitis B is 9%, which is the highest percentage in Western Europe.
This research was conducted by Prof Louisa Degenhardt of the Centre for Population Health, Burnet Institute, Melbourne, Australia, and Paul Nelson from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at the University of New South Wales.

"This study provides us with a first step and powerful data to draw attention to the problem of viral hepatitis in people who use drugs. The next step is to challenge governments to act, and hold them accountable for implementation of rights-respecting and evidence-based programs", says Dr. Joseph Amon of Human Rights Watch, New York City, US.

Belgium pillow war 800

BRUSSELS – 800 men and women headlong without any piece of clothing in a pillow fight in Brussels, Belgium. This is a form of installation art from artists United States (U.S.) Spencer Tunick.

On behalf of the arts, installation, entitled “Sleeping Beauties” was held at Castle Gaasbeek, which is located approximately six miles from the Belgian capital, Brussels. Tunick's work is far more explores the naked body of men and women in public places.

His work time is certainly surprising to see a plain body without any clothes, each time using a pillow. Less 800 people pillow fight seemed to enjoy it without feeling uncomfortable going to their smooth bodies. So reported the Daily Mail on Sunday (07/10/2011).

Action nyeleneh 800 naked man was later immortalized by Tunick in a photograph. He also set naked volunteers pose in how the war ended with a pillow.

Seems not too difficult to arrange for Tunick art installation. The proof, such as 800 people freely and feel comfortable with her body without ditutupi clothes and gather together in the environment outside the castle.

Remarkably, Tunick does not cost much to finish this art installation. He even just pay them a limited edition photograph as compensation.

Spencer Tunick is known for giving work naked from the familiar interpretation of his art. Initially he took nude photos of the object at a school in Dulwich, London, England. Over time, Tunick also increasingly have a crazy idea to take photographs of the location of an unusual object.

Nude project he ever did was in Mexico some time ago. It was approximately 18 thousand people, willing to be photographed nude in downtown Mexico City. This ambitious project he called the Zocalo.

Toshiba Journe Android

Toshiba are set to release an Android based tablet similar to the European counter-part called the JournE Touch. According to the general manager of digital products for the US division, Jeff Barney, these tablets will be branded as ‘slates’ and will also come with a number of OS choices, including Windows 7.

The bad news is that Android will only be used in the 10” model, which is pitted as a direct competitor to Apple’s iPad. I suppose the silver-lining here is that the Android device will float a lower price point than the more expensive Windows-based models which are likely to sport higher-end features such as dual displays.

According to Jeff Barney, Toshiba now see a ripe market for the tablet based PC. Really? Trust me when I say that you will not find any Apple fan boys around these parts, but this is an easy statement after we have all sat back and watched how the market reacted after Apple released the iPad.

To be fair to Toshiba, the company does already have a similar device in Europe, but it runs Windows CE and has no third party applications. The American Android based offering will help address these fundamental issues. It is set to arrive in the last part of 2010 or early 2011.

Nokia announces C2-02, C2-03 and C2-06 trio of feature phones

Nokia Series 40 just got smarter, folks. The latest additions to the feature phone portfolio of the Finnish giant are bound to narrow the gap between smart and dumb phones. With a set of new features which were previously reserved for the segment of the premium phones, and a low price tag, the C2 trio of phones which starts with the dual-SIM, Touch and Type Nokia C2-03 is bound to make a serious splash in its target markets.

Now on with the specs. Nokia's creation has taken the dual-SIM functionality to a whole new level with the Easy Swap feature. It allows the user to quickly change SIM cards through a slot on the side of the phone with no need for a reboot. The phone can remember the settings of up to five different SIM cards.
Like we mentioned before, there is also a touch screen and a sliding numeric keyboard available on the device. The touch screen has 240x320 resolution and supports up to 65K colors.

There is a 2 megapixel camera on the back of the phone and 10MB of built in memory, which can be expanded to 32GB via microSD cards. The standby time of the phone is quoted at 400 hours, while the talk time is 5 hours. There is a radio and a music player on board too.
And now the major novelties to Series 40. The Nokia C2-03 has a brand new version of Nokia Maps preloaded. It allows users to search for locations while offline as well, saving them possible data charges from their operator. The latest Nokia Browser for Series 40 is also part of the phone's software. It compresses the data and provides a faster and more cost-efficient web browsing experience.

All this premium-ish functionality is tucked into a nicely looking, 118g package which costs a very affordable €77 before any taxes and subsidies. While the features may not sound like much, it is important to note that Nokia will target mainly the developing markets with the C2-03, where having an unlimited data plan and a smartphone to use it on is an expensive pleasure. Having a Nokia C2-03 will enable people to get a taste of premium phone services without the high price tag.

The Nokia C2-03 will have two additional flavors. For those who don't need the dual-SIM functionality, there will be the previously leaked Nokia C2-02. The phone looks the exact same but supports only one SIM card.

Nokia C2-02
There is also the Nokia C2-06 with a range of bright colors available and, again, the same set of functions. This one, we have seen before as well.

Nokia C2-06
You can check out a video which highlights the features of the Nokia C2-03 below:

Obama renews push for grand bargain on debt

President Barack Obama said Friday he has not given up hope for a broad deficit reduction deal, urging Republicans to accept a fiscal stability package that includes higher taxes on the wealthy and reforms to politically popular entitlement programs such as Medicare and Social Security.

Such a measure would be part of plan to avert a potential economic meltdown by raising the nation's current $14.3 trillion federal debt ceiling.

The president also stressed he has not ruled out less ambitious plans focused more narrowly on a debt ceiling increase.

Let's "set politics aside" and "do some tough stuff," Obama told reporters at a White House news conference. But "if Washington operates as usual and can't get anything done, let's at least avert Armageddon."

Tense negotiations between top Democrats and Republicans, reflecting core ideological principles on taxes and the size of government, have become a race against the clock. Administration officials have warned that a failure to raise the debt ceiling by August 2 could trigger a partial default.

If Washington lacks the money to pay its bills, interest rates could skyrocket and the value of the dollar could decline, among other things.

The seriousness of the situation was reinforced Thursday when a major credit rating agency, Standard and Poor's, said it was placing the United States' sovereign rating on "CreditWatch with negative implications."

Moody's Investors Services -- another major rating agency -- said Wednesday it would put the sterling bond rating of the United States on review for possible downgrade.

Obama warned this week he could not guarantee that older Americans will receive their Social Security checks next month if a deal is not reached. GOP leaders accused the president of resorting to scare tactics.

Talks over the last five days, however, have failed to produce a concrete deal. Obama has suggested that a sixth meeting could be held this weekend if sufficient progress isn't made, according to a Republican aide familiar with the latest negotiations.

The president told congressional leaders Thursday he expected them to consult with their respective caucuses and find agreement over the next 24 to 36 hours on how to proceed.

House Republicans have shown no sign of accepting higher taxes on the rich as part of a so-called "balanced" approach to debt reduction. GOP leaders, who consider tax hikes detrimental to the economic recovery, blasted the president Friday morning for failing to produce what they consider to be a legitimate spending cut plan.

Peter Dinklage is optimistic to win an Emmy

While HBO's epic fantasy series Game of Thrones has stirred much debate over its nudity and violence, Peter Dinklage's scene-stealing turn as Tyrion Lannister has been almost universally praised, even scoring the American actor an Emmy nomination for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series.

His recognition should come as no surprise to fans of the show and author George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series, on which Thrones is based, but for newbies looking to understand Dinklage's appeal, here's a few reasons why we think the actor, 42, deserves Emmy gold for bringing Tyrion to life.

Review: Final 'Harry Potter' goes out with a bang

The concluding episode of the long-running and phenomenally successful series is a triumph for J.K. Rowling and her collaborators: screenwriter Steve Kloves, producer David Heyman and most of all, director David Yates.

This is blockbuster filmmaking with heart and soul, as well as grand spectacle, excitement and that typically British line in wry self-effacement. It's been a long time -- well, at least since "Toy Story 3" -- that a summer tentpole picture has so thoroughly exceeded expectations.

Of course the eighth film builds on the achievements of the previous seven, and especially on the reservoir of emotional connections fans have built up with the series' youthful but maturing stars.

We have followed Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson for 10 years now, since they were 11, and amidst all the CGI wizardry and fantasy the films also stand as the most expensive home movies ever made, a documentary record of these children transforming into young adults.

The series' other great strength (along with the digital effects team's vivid rendering of Rowling's most imaginative fancies) has been as a showcase for a vast gallery of terrific character acting.

Personal favorites include Helena Bonham-Carter's banshee-like Bellatrix LeStrange, Gary Oldman's stalwart Sirius Black and Maggie Smith's dotty but redoubtable Minerva McGonagall. But that is to sleight the contributions of Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Ralph Fiennes, Emma Thompson, Jim Broadbent and so many others.

Rickman (Severus Snape) is delicious, here, reduced to just a handful of lines but savoring each and every syllable. And Fiennes' theatrical Voldemort is electrifying in the final scenes.

Rowling probably doesn't get compared to Charles Dickens in any other respect, but when it comes to creating larger-than-life characters, she has taken his lessons to heart, and actors must love her for it.

If the last several films have been hampered by Rowling's reluctance to get on with the story -- it has been two steps forward and one step back for a while now -- that doesn't apply to the climax.

But Yates, who shepherded the previous three movies dutifully without ever showing much passion before now, knows better than to rush things. There's a striking composure and conviction about the early dialogue scenes.

Sony launching two oddly shaped tablets

For its entry into the U.S. tablet market, Sony Electronics is forgoing that common design, popularized by Apple's iPad. The Japanese company's upcoming tablets look and feel more like folded magazines and a pair of sunglasses than the parade of rectangles on the market now.

The first Android tablet, the S1, looks like dozens of other tablets at first glance. But the back has a "wraparound" curved lip that's supposed to feel like a magazine does when it's folded over. In a brief test Wednesday, this design felt more natural than some models with flatter backs.

The second, the S2, resembles an oversize sunglasses case. The rounded metallic gizmo can be flipped open like a book to reveal two touchscreens, each measuring 5.5 inches diagonally.

The split-screen display is appropriate for reading books, and Sony will include a version of its e-book software that's optimized for the device. But the S2 "will coexist" with the dedicated monochrome-display e-readers Sony sells, said Phil Molyneux, president and operating chief for Sony Electronics.

The S2's clamshell design -- an old idea that has been resurrected from the flip-phone era -- is intended to make the S2 more portable, Molyneux said.

"There's not many actual other products that you can actually fit in your pocket today unless you make your pocket much bigger," Molyneux said.

Except for phones?

To which Molyneux said: "This will show you a whole page of the Internet."

The S2 will be sold jointly with AT&T Mobility and can connect to AT&T's faster cellular data network. The S1 will only be able to connect to the Internet through Wi-Fi networks.

Sony's pair of tablets run Google's Android operating system. They will debut sometime in the fall, Sony executives said. The company plans to disclose information about pricing and release dates closer to their debut. The names of these devices also could change in the next few months.

Sony will face mounting competition from new entrants. Tablet-industry newcomer Toshiba launched the Thrive this month, and Samsung Electronics, an early contender, continues to roll out tablets in a variety of sizes.

Sony is targeting a more status-minded customer with these devices, similar to Apple's with the iPad, executives said during the news conference.

Copa America 2011 update

MEXICO CITY, July 14, 2011 (AFP) - The head coach of Mexico's U-22, Luis Fernando Tena, regretted having left a bad impression in the Copa America 2011 in Argentina, but refused to have failed, in remarks made on Thursday, on his return to Mexico.

"It wasn’t good the image we left. The players left everything, but we could have given more than what we saw", Tena said in a press conference at the International Airport of Mexico City.

Although the Tricolor has not scored a single point, and scored just one goal in 270 minutes played, Tena denied that his team has failed to consider the size of the rivals faced: Uruguay, Peru and Chile.

"Playing a competition with a U-22 against teams as strong as Chile and losing by 2-1 is not a failure. I do think that the team had to play better, that makes me upset. But we must not make a big scandal", asked Tena.

The latest nude photo installation by daring U.S. artist Spencer Tunick, has seen 800 volunteers shed their clothes in the name of art.

Cruise ship sinking tragedy in Russia

The Russian river boat Bulgaria went down at 2 p.m. local time Sunday about 450 miles east of Moscow. While the exact cause is unknown, it was reported to be raining heavily at the time, the ship was maintained poorly and a lax implementation of safety rules look to be contributing factors in the Titanic-like sinking of the ship. The tragic accident highlights good reasons for some of the strict requirements major cruise lines have for passengers.

The ship was overloaded

The 56 year old ship had 208 people on board including 25 unregistered passengers and not enough life vests in Russia's worst river accident in three decades.

"We have raised 41 bodies. There are 28 women, 10 men and the rest are children," an emergencies ministry official in the central Russian republic of Tatarstan where the accident occurred Sunday told the Interfax news agency.

This is one reason why major cruise lines (Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, etc) have cabins rated to hold a certain number of passengers. While double occupancy is the industry standard, a limited number of cabins on most ships will accommodate more, but not all. U.S. Coast Guard ship inspections put a high emphasis on safety and ships not in compliance with standards are not able to sail. Period.

Children lost at sea

As many as 60 of the passengers may have been children, Russian media reported, and survivors said some 30 children had gathered in a room near the stern of the ship to play just minutes before it sank.

"Practically no children made it out. There were many children on the boat, very many," survivor Natalya Makarova said on state television. She said she had lost her grip on her daughter as they struggled to escape.

Major cruise lines tag children with arm bands and know were children are. In order to board ships operated by major cruise lines, strict documentation requirements are in place that must be satisfied or boarding will be denied.

The Moscow Times reports that thirty-six children who died on the Bulgaria all had the same birth date, Dec. 30, 1999, on the passenger manifest, indicating that they were allowed to board without their identification documents, said ministry official Marat Rakhmatullin.

Safety is an ongoing issue with major cruise lines who are constantly working to make ships even safer. Royal Caribbean, for example, introduced a tagging system on Oasis of the Seas for three to 11-year-olds that uses an electronic device built into the wristbands that all children on the ship must wear. The system enables parents to locate children wherever they are among the ship's 16 decks reports the Telegraph.

Safety not a big priority

Lax implementation of safety rules are responsible for many of Russia's deadly accidents, from fires to plane crashes and mining disasters since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Major cruise lines hold safety drills at the beginning of each voyage so passengers know what to do in case of emergency.

'It sank in two or three minutes, very fast," Liliya Khaziyeva, a spokeswoman for the Rescue Service from the neighboring Udmurtia region, said by phone from a boat near the accident site. "We found dead people wearing life vests, people who were simply unable to leave the ship." reports Business Week.

Last overhauled in 1980, the ship was running with a malfunctioning left engine and was not licensed to carry passengers.

One possible cause appeared to have been a lack of air conditioning which prompted the crew to open portholes that were then flooded by an incoming wave reports the Moscow Times.

Lessons learned

History will probably write that this ship sank over safety issues. From overloading the vessel with too many passengers to relaxed maintenance or simply attempting to operate a ship that was too old, the incident clearly points out how very important these issues are and what a good job major cruise lines do of answering the call for safety.

Safety drills at the beginning of each cruise on major cruise lines are mandatory, ships have ample life vests for all guests and oversight by government authorities keep the system in check.

Today's Titanic

The Russian incident naturally raises some serious questions. Are today's cruise lines operating as safely as possible? Is it possible to ever have another Titanic-like event?

Major cruise lines have set-in-stone rules regarding documentation needed to board a passenger ship. The requirements are strict and systems on board keep track of every passenger coming on or going off a ship. Behind-the-scenes activities performed by everyone from travel agents to embarkation staff at the pier help insure a safe voyage.

Cruise liners today are much bigger and better equipped. At 46,328 gross registered tons, Titanic was the largest and most advanced ship of her day. Today's largest and most advanced ship, Allure of the Seas, is more than four times larger and carries almost twice as many people. Big ships are not nearly as "remarkable" as they were in 1912. Shipyards seem to crank them out as fast as they are ordered. Cruise lines deploy ships all over the planet now without hesitation to move one if an itinerary does not produce the anticipated results.

French Open Offices in North Korea

France will open a bureau in North Korea's cooperation, the newspaper Le Monde said on Tuesday. But it stressed that Paris did not launch diplomatic ties with the reclusive Stalinist state it.

A senior French diplomat now in Pyongyang, where he "will convey to North Korea" a representative of France that is to come, the newspaper said. Allegedly, representatives of France's Olivier Vaysset, a diplomat who has worked in Singapore.

"The opening of the office that does not mean that France would open diplomatic relations with the sort of totalitarian state that," he said, but added that the office will act as a "diplomatic intermediaries".

The proposed office will handle the cultural cooperation, according to the newspaper. French move came as relations between North Korea and South Korea to their lowest setback after Pyongyang accused Seoul of torpedoing a ship of war in March 2010, which killed 46 soldiers.

North Korea angrily denied the accusations, but continued to attack an island on the border last November, killing four South Koreans, including two civilians.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has sent the former minister Jack Lang in 2009 to North Korea for talks, and Lang at the time of his return recommended that the cooperation established an office in Pyongyang.

Lady Gaga "hatches" from egg, sports pointy shoulders

Gaga, 24, declared in a Twitter message that she was "in incubation" for her live appearance. Aides said she had spent three hours crouched inside the egg with an oxygen mask ahead of her arrival.

Borne aloft by attendants dressed in scanty gold-colored garb, the egg was the latest in a series of stunts by the performance artist and singer. In September, she wore a headline-grabbing dress made entirely of raw meat that she wore to the MTV Music Video Awards.

Onstage on Sunday, she crawled out of the egg dressed in yellow and sporting what appeared to be pointed shoulder implants.

Away from the Grammy ceremony in Los Angeles, the singer made headlines by saying in a pre-recorded TV interview that she uses marijuana and whiskey to help write her songs.

"(I) drink a lot of whiskey and I smoke weed when I write. And I don't do it a lot because it's not good for my voice," the singer told TV news show "60 Minutes".

"I don't want to encourage kids to do drugs....And I don't lie. I'm not a liar. I built good will with my fans. They know who I am. And I'm just like them in so many ways," she added.

Halfway through the Grammy ceremony, Gaga had won three of the six awards she had been nominated for -- one for her album "The Fame Monster" and two for her song "Bad Romance."

"I had this dream when I was really young that I could be whoever I wanted to be," she said in her acceptance speech.

The singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, told "60 Minutes" there was always a point to her outrageous outfits.

Born July 9 day Southern Sudan

The brand new Republic of Southern Sudan on Saturday became the 193rd State of the United Nations.

This is the youngest nation in the world: Southern Sudan declared its independence Saturday during an official ceremony in Juba. This ceremony was held in the presence of several foreign leaders. Official statements of recognition of the new state were sent today, like that of Egypt or of the United States.

The south of Africa's largest country, predominantly Christian, separates from the northern Muslim-majority, after decades of conflict and war that led to millions of deaths.

The flag of the new country was raised during the ceremony.

Head of the Parliament of Southern Sudan, James Wanni Igga, speaking in front of tens of thousands of people, said the independence of Southern Sudan reminded of the struggle of the people of this country for justice, freedom, equality and political and economic emancipation. He said this young republic wished to establish a government that respects the rule of law, justice, democracy, human rights and diversity. According to Igga, the fledgling Republic is committed to establish friendly relations with all countries, including its neighbor, the Republic of Sudan.

One of the most important guests of this ceremony was the Union general Omar al-Bashir, who is under international arrest warrants for genocide and crimes against humanity in Darfur.

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is also involved in the celebrations as well as representatives of the United States, Britain and France in particular.

The CIA refused to revealed the identity of the operating TEAM Abbottabad

An anonymous CIA analyst who refused promotion so he could continue to track down al-Qaida leaders was the brains behind the operation to kill Osama bin Laden.

Identified only as "John", his middle name, he is said to have been overcome with emotion when speaking to senators in a secret session about how he pulled together the information that led to the terrorist leader behind the September 11 atrocities.

He was standing just out of shot when the famous photograph was taken of President Barack Obama and his team watching the U.S. Navy Seals raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

The CIA is divided principally between operators - spies in the classic mould - and analysts, those who sift through the material the operators gather and usually spend their whole careers in the agency's headquarters in Langley, Virginia.

The Associated Press, which reported the analyst's pivotal role, agreed to a CIA request not to reveal his identity for fear he could become a target.

He was the first to put in writing last summer the discovery that the CIA might have a real lead to bin Laden. He oversaw the team at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia that led the agency to bin Laden's fortified compound.

For nearly a decade, John's principal job was to find bin Laden. A former Russia and Balkans specialist, he wrote what was viewed as the definitive profile of Vladimir Putin before shifting his focus to al-Qaida.
